A bogey free -6!! I am on the Golf+ facebook page and read about grabbing a 7 iron and matching the club length and it has helped. 18 Putt one in the water but was able to chip on and sink a decent putt!!

Did you have the right settings I didn't see your score, or maybe I had the wrong ones

Nice, just not sure how you are doing it lol. My putting needs to get better and every once and while I get a random ball flying way off right. How long have you been playing Golf+

That was fun, super interesting from the front tees! +5 on 18 with an accidental shot when I took headset off on 17 trying to get an angle to get around boulder and not hit the couch again, which resulted in the only double of the round. +1 on the front 9 loop.

I got the Oculus 2 the day it was released, so...Covid-times. Maybe 2020? 2021? I think I got Golf+ very much shortly after I got the actual unit. I've spent some time dialing in the "Oculus swing" vs. "real swing" - they're definitely not the same, and I still FOR SURE have the odd "what the hell was THAT" swing :)

To be totally transparent, I'm more than willing to start these events and treat them as practice rounds until I put a good one together. For example, I had the front 9 at -7 earlier today, but then went 3-putt bogey, par, double-bogey on the back 9, and just started over. Considering a full 18 takes about 20 minutes, I can usually fit in several rounds on my lunch break, so I tend to treat the first few 'gos' as practice-rounds.

For me, it's all about getting into the groove of A) what does a 'real swing' feel like, and B) how fast are the greens with this particular setting. Once you dial that in, it's all about feel, and I tend to do pretty well (especially with the shortened round-length) at remembering those particular "feels."

I ALSO took the time to dial in my driver so that it was producing my ideal ball-flight - things you can set via the settings in-game. I want to see a baby-draw, at least as an ideal, and you can actually dial that in. I know that my BEST shot in real life is a small draw (we're talking 5 yards here), and you can actually set the Oculus to be dialed into that setting with some tweaking of the settings. I now have a bit of a "left miss" (I'm right-handed, mind you) if I over-cook it, but for the most part, it's really helped with my game.

You've played with me - I'm for SURE still capable of a massive miss. But, because it's "just a video game," I don't mind tweaking it to my "ideal," even if I'll never actually get there on-course (I'm thrilled with a 5-yard fade in real life, lol).

Not sure that helps, but I've definitely spent a lot of time trying to figure out chip-shots, bunker shots, etc. Sometimes it still wrecks my round, but the practice definitely pays off.

@StillEwe Gonna need a video of your oculus swing so we can try and replicate it 🤪

what stick are you using? I find that can make a difference in how well you do in the game.

the putting is the worst part. I find it nearly impossible to read the greens. I know there are lines on the greens to give you a general idea of speed/slope but they do nothing for me. sometimes the break doesn't match what is on the screen.

if you go to practice mode there is a putt-putt course if you want to practice putting. I just found it the other day.

I look at the scores of the leaders in the daily tournament and I don't know how they do it. One guy birdied 7 holes, eagled 1 and had a par on another one on the front 9. I would like to see this in action.

I agree that driving and getting a feel for chipping and pitching is key. half shots are really tough.

Just like real golf some days I putt good and others we don't talk about lol.

I have one of the cheaper accessories and there is no way I can get the club face closed at impact. Through game settings I have closed the face on clubs and shortened them. This has brought shots closer to what I would expect but I will still ahve to tinker with it.

I think I am going to go with your recommendation this evening and bring my clubs closer to a 7i length except for wedges. Really just need to get one repeatable swing and let the "loft" do the work in the game for this

I did this with my 7 iron in the game and let it make that adjustment to all other clubs. I noticed when I closed the face it helped but when doing short chips with only a limited back swing everything goes left because the club can stay square in that short swing, so I will need ot play around with that as well.

one thing I found as your playing is don't assume that the game will always select the right iron for the distance. I used to do that and my shots would hit the green and go rocketing by.

I use the Yezro weighted stick (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CY7RYLH1?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_fed_asin_title)

Greens can absolutely be tricky, and really, I only score well when I'm feeling the groove, so to speak. With the greens set to "Fast", they typically break less than one would "read" - I've started adding a bit of pace to most of my putts to try to reinforce that idea. I do find, though, that once I get the pace of the greens, I make a LOT of putts just based on muscle-memory from other greens I've played with the same setting.

As for club selection, when you play on "Pro", you DEFINITELY have to take into consideration wind, lie, spin, etc. The base club suggestion is just that - a suggestion based strictly on yardage. For example, if you have 125 from a bunker, they'll usually recommend your 125-ish club (GW/PW?). But you need at least 2 clubs more (9i/8i) to actually get it to the green. Rough is often a one-club penalty, but be careful about spin, since it won't have nearly as much as it would from the fairway (true to life, there).

The fun thing for me is that I've been trying to groove a MUCH more outward takeaway in my real golf swing, and implementing it on the Oculus has actually helped my Golf+ scoring a ton. It seems to do the thing it's supposed to - promote a more in-to-out swing, and help me avoid the dreaded right-block-slice-miss.

If there's any interest, I was thinking about potentially recording a whole round and doing a relatively light edit on it, kind of an "every shot" thing - I'm not sure if that's anything ANYONE would want to watch (ooh, yeah, let's watch this doofus play golf...in VR...lol), but let me know if that sounds like it might be helpful or useful.

Thanks for the advice.

I definitely notice a difference between a weighted stick vs non. I don't know how people play using just the controllers!

I'm curious - after being snowed in for the last 6-8 weeks - how much a difference swinging a real club will be. I do the VR each day. It is weird not being able to see your feet, but maybe that's a good thing?

I'd be interested in watching a round just to see how you get to 14 under... my goodness. I played the Wolf today and ended up -6 and thought that was good.

Would love to see it!

My miss in VR, especially if I have played a bunch, has been just low pulls. Played with settings last night, and set all clubs to 90% length and I feel like that helped. For the first couple rounds, I had my driver and woods set to around a 20% fade bias, but as the practice and rounds went on, that ended up being counter productive. Did however do the boost calibration swinging as hard as I could, and ended up with a 10-17% help on all clubs which I assume will assist with fatigue. Tried the manual 100% on driver and just do a super smooth swing but ended up slicing everything so bad as I wasn't doing a full rotational swing, so quickly abandoned the idea of just trying little half swings on the game.

Did beat my wolf creek score by 1 stroke, but going eagle triple double birdie isn't the best strategy for going low 😅

I jsut shot a -10 but didn't see anyone else and pretty sure I played Front tee med pins and low wind

ShawnC

Figured out why I was -10 and I didn't see anybody. I had just played the Grass Clippings course and it put me as amateur and I must have carried that over to the WOlf Creek round will have to check when I load it up next time to see the settings.

I always have such a hard time at wolf creek. I don't know what it is about that course. I have one more chance to improve. I think my best so far is even. playing the front really brings eagle into play but there's also a ton of risk if you don't hit it straight. I can't figure out how to judge the distance off the dirt.
